With the release of PepperDash Essentials as an open source project, we hope to provide Crestron developers an opportunity to collaborate, regardless of location, place of employment, skill level, or experience.Įven without the intent of deploying Essentials, developers can find value in comparing architectures and methods. This siloed landscape reduces collaborative momentum and increases the collective time spent on code duplication. The majority of Crestron developers find themselves working independently or within small teams, limiting their opportunities for feedback and learning from industry peers. Unfortunately, viable open source software options are harder to come by in the audiovisual industry, which creates some unique challenges. These are also primary drivers for the high adoption rate of open source software. Trust and transparency are foundational elements for any healthy, long-term relationship. We believe this is an important first step toward enabling Consultants and AV Designers to specify a professional, peer-reviewed framework for the control software, and to provide IT Managers with more viable options for support of their systems. To help offset these industry challenges, we have released our PepperDash Essentials framework as open source software. This lack of a common specification leads directly to the extremely custom nature of typical AV software, and in-turn, provides very few cost-effective options for IT Managers to have their systems serviced and upgraded. The closed, proprietary nature of most audiovisual control software limits the ability of Consultants and AV Designers to directly specify the quality of the control software.
